Chevron Is Still Buying Russian Oil

In the fourth week of attacks on Ukraine, in the shadow of flashy apologies and withdrawals by the oil industry from Russia, Chevron slipped up.

Or, perhaps it is fairer to say, Chevron did exactly what it tends to do, but the cover up wasn't as smooth. According to the New York Times, “a tanker chartered by Chevron, the U.S. oil giant, [left] Novorossiysk on Friday carrying nearly 100,000 tons of crude and is currently en route to the Netherlands.”

The excuse? It's a blend of Russian and other oil. It's kind of like feeding a kid who's allergic to peanut butter a PB&J and then saying it's ok, because the sandwich is mostly jelly.

In short, Chevron is profiteering off the crisis in Ukraine, just as it has raked in dirty money in Richmond, CA, where children choke on refinery smog, and the Ecuadorian Amazon, where cancer rates are freakishly high. People and their problems are just obstacles for this oil giant's access to ill-begotten profits.

This year, Chevron reported profits of $15.6 billion USD, and dished out $6.4 million in lobbying dollars to politicians around the US. Chevron is devoted to profiteering on the backs of people and at the expense of the planet. It's time to Stop the Oil Profiteering.
